Oh the Deep Deep Love of God
God loves Hillary Clinton.
And Donald Trump. And those “deplorable”
followers of his who are racist, sexist, and violent.
God loves victims of sexual harassment, sexual abuse, and
sexual violence. He also loves
perpetrators of sexual harassment, sexual abuse, and sexual violence.
God loves citizens in oppressive regimes who are hungry, endangered,
and estranged. And he loves those
dictators who are doing the oppressing and embezzling and killing.
God loves those who live in crushing poverty. And those who enrich themselves on the backs
of those living in crushing poverty. And
those who make a lot of money honestly.
And those who cheat and lie and bilk.
God loves black lives.
And blue lives. And all lives.
Whoever you think are the “good guys” in this world, God
loves them. And whoever you think are
the “bad guys” in this world, God loves them too.
God hates the sin, more than you can fathom. And He loves the sinner, more than you can
even comprehend.
There is plenty of sin out there in the world that I am
aware of, and God hates all of it. There
is plenty of sin in my own heart that I am aware of, and God hates all of it.
There are plenty of sinners out there in the world who I am
aware of, and God loves all of them. I
am one of them, so I know God loves me.
Oh, the deep, deep love of God. If sin has brought us to our knees – our own
sin, our own being sinned against, or our seeing sin out there in the world –
we are now where we ought to have been brought to, had we devoted but a singular
reflection on the deep, deep love of God. May that love reign, in our hearts and in our world. Amen.
